Abstract: Mark Twain, a mastermind of humor and realism, is seen as a giant in world literature. His humorous satire had great impact on the following men of letters; critics also attached significant importance to it and put forward various interpretations. Noticeably, his humor? ous satire finds full expression in his famous short story, Running for Governor. In it, with humor and satire, he exposed the true features and hypocrisy of American democracy. In Running for Governor, at the beginning of the story, Twain wrote: â€Å"A few months ago I was nominated for Governor of the great state of New York, to run against Mr. John T. Twain’s life is difficult, but he wrote a large number of literary works. Abstract Quality of work life is an important indicator and yardstick for any organization to measure its overall performance and overall satisfaction of its stakeholder‟s .Quality of work life comprises of several factors which are influencing the quality of work life in different dimensions. Quality of work life of this industry is concerned the safety, healthy work environment, adequate and fair compensation and social relevance are undedicated by the internal stakeholders (Employees).Also the lower level workers don‟t have ,that much amount of quality of work life that is why they don‟t have that much level of involvement in their company. Hence to bring-up the expected level of involvement of the employees they must be provided enough amount of training and they must be given on –par treatment while compare with the rest of the level of employees of their organization. Introduction Historically, cultural values about work have shifted greatly over the years. In ancient time work was performed only by slaves, The Renaissance and Reformation brought great changes in prevailing attitude towards work. Work acquired a moral dignity of its own. Work serves many purposes. The economic function of work for producing goods and services is its most obvious value. In return form of production the work is paid wages that enable the purchase of good, shelter, plus other needs and luxuries of life. But work serves other values as well. As part of social needs people are supplied at the work place, were they meet, and converse and share experiences. One‟s job connotes a certain social status both for the worker and his or her family. Work also contributes to an employee‟s self-esteem by reflecting a contribution to the work group, department and company. If a person is competent and meets his own personal and the boss‟ satisfaction expectations, this contributes to a sense of personal worth. Quality of Work Life (QWL) is a relatively new concept. It refers to the favorableness or unfavrableness of a job environment for people (Davis and Newstrom, 1985). Evolution of quality of work life Walton attributes the evolution of QWL to various phases in history. Legislation enacted in early 20th century to protect employees from job-injury and to eliminate hazardous working conditions, followed by the unionization movement in the 1930s and 1940s were the initial steps. Emphasis was given to „job security‟, due process at the work place and economic gains for the worker‟. The 1950s and the 1960s saw the development of different theories by psychologists proposing a „positive relationship between morale and productivity‟, and the possibility that improved human relations would lead to the enhancement of both. Attempts to reform and to acquire equal employment opportunities and job enrichment schemes also were introduced. Finally, in the 1970s the idea of QWL was conceived which according to Walton, is broader than these earlier developments and is something that must include „ the values that were at the heart of these earlier reform movements‟ and „human needs and aspirations‟(Walton, 1973). The modern interest in the quality of work life was stimulated through efforts to change the scope of people satisfaction job in attempting to motivate them (Tyagi 1997). The jobs should seek to employ higher skills of workers, improve their skills, and contribute to general Social advancement as well as programs that offer employees, the opportunity to purchase equity in their firms or programs that provide protection against arbitrary action for their supervisors (Robins, S. 1997). Criteria for quality of work life: It has been pointed out by Ted Mills that one of the problems with the tern is that â€Å"quality of work life† is not a single, specific notion. Rather, it subsumes a whole pass of terms and notions, all of which he feels really belong under the umbrella â€Å"quality of work life†: 1. Industrial Effectiveness 2. Human Resource Development 3. Organizational Effectiveness 4. Works Restructure 5. Job Enrichment 6. Organizational Restructure 7. Socio- Technical Systems 8. Work Humanization 9. Group work concept 10. Cooperation work restructures Importance of Quality of Work Life: Quality work life is essentially the concept of favorable situation of a work environment. It is imperative in any type of organizations to ensure high productivity and involvement of employees in generation of goods and services of better quality. The global economy presents the organization with new challenges to be faced by the employees. To make it more imperative employee‟s involvement and commitment are required in achieving organizational goals. Such involvements and commitments could be secured only through improved quality of work life. Furthermore working life is regarded as a larger ecological complex of human resource. So ultimately the quality of working life of employees should be made better and pave the way for satisfied working conditions and make them involved in the growth of the organization. Review of Literature: Cohen. D.S (1979) Quality of work is a process of joint decision making, collaboration and building mutual respect between management and employee, which seems to cause a change in how people feel about labour their work and each other. It is this change in the human climate that quality advocated, maintains, increases satisfaction and facilitates better solution to management and production. Ekramul Hoque, M. and Alinoor Rahman (1999) They attempted to compare the QWL of industrial workers according to the nature of the organizations and to measure whether there is any significant relationship among quality of work life, job behaviour and demographic variables of the workers. The result revealed workers of private sector textile mills perceived significantly higher QWL than in the public sector; QWL has significant negative correlation with absenteeism and accident and QWL has significant positive correlation with performance. 3 Tambe M.R. (2000) In a broad sense QWL includes job enrichment group work concept, labour management cooperation, workers involvement, co-operative work environment and organizational industrial effectiveness. In a narrow sense it is a conductive and encouraging job and physical environment. Mentz (2001) conducted a study to determine the quality of work life of teachers in farm schools in South Africa. The sample consists of 60 teachers in 15 farm schools. Findings indicate that teachers in rural schools are generally satisfied with circumstances and enjoy teaching; they are satisfied with classroom size, physical facilities and teacher student relations. Topper (2008) The literature reviews of psychological and sociological studies of job satisfaction in general and specifically for library workers were under taken by Topper(2008). The investigation was primarily intended to measure the job satisfaction among library workers. It revealed that the library workers are very satisfied in their job. It also underlined the fa ct that job satisfaction should be the key factor for recruitment of the next generation library workers. Edwards, J.,Van laar ,D.L &Easton ,S.(2009).Regular assessment of quality of work life can potentially provide organization with important information about the welfare of their employees, such as job satisfaction, general well-being, work related stress and the home-work interface. Objective To find out the existing level of Quality of Work Life perceived by the employees in cement industry Research methodology: Research Design The research design is an important yardstick and it is describing the properties of the proposed research with related to a particular domine. This article is concerned; the research design is descriptive in nature. This article is going to evaluate the existing level of quality of work life which is prevailing in cement industry at Ariyalur District. Survey and sampling method: The researcher is decided to deploy the primary data from the concerned indust ry [respondents] with the help of the data collection tool [questionnaire]. Apart from the primary data the required data‟s to enhance the quality of the article is to be collected from the secondary sources such as books, magazines and annual reports of the companies. The data which is to be collected from the respondents on random basis [simple random sampling]. The companies which are included in this survey are TANCEM, BIRLA and RAMCO. The sample size which is a determined for the study is 300 from all three companies. Statistical tool used: The collected data which is analyzed with the help of ANOVA. As a warrior, I was used to the nomadic lifestyle and moving from this to a more stationary life was not something that was interesting to me. I, therefore, joined many of the other warriors and leader who rejected this treaty. There was no way we could be forced into the reservation system and wait on the government subsidies.... Tension began to grow in early 1875 when Custer came over into the already established reservation system. His aim was to map the area ad to locate a suitable place which was to be used in the construction of a military post. He also came to conduct an exploration of the natural resources in the area. Luckily for him, he stumbled upon gold deposits. Word went round about this and we all came to know about the gold deposits in our land. Immediately, a proposition was made by the US government of buying the land and this was rejected by the Lakota leaders. Researchers must develop a solid research question, construct a research design, and identify a sample design to collect data. Organizational Dilemma Research Question Turnover problems like those experienced by the hospitals that participated in the HSM research lead to multiple research questions, such as (i) what are the reasons for high RN turnover rates that lead to job vacancies and (ii) how can the organization resolve turnover problems. In the organizational context, the dilemma here is: why are there high RN turnover rates that lead to job vacancies? Identify and Analyze Research Question The research question identified is â€Å"Why is there high turnover rate for acute care nurses?† The problem defined by the team is the inability to retain acute care nurses. A study performed by the American Organization of Nurse Executives states that there was an average of 21.3% turnover rate for RN’s in 2000, but percentage rates were higher for RN’s in specialty hospitals (2001). The practices and policies of an organization allow employees to remain within the organization for an extended period. There is a significant financial loss to the facility if the nurse leaves the organization after training is complete Research Design Learning Team C will adopt a formal research design to answer the research question. We will use monitoring as opposed to communication in most circumstances unless otherwise specified. The research will be ex post facto or experimental. The research will be cross sectional because of time constraints. The study will be a statistical study of proportions. A case study could be used, if time allows. We will treat this study as a lab assignment although simulations and field work is a possibility. If communication is used care should be taken to optimize participant awareness (Cooper Schindler, 2008, p. 141-145). Some questions to take into consideration would be what the reasons for high turn-over rates are for nurses. Does education play a part? Do work conditions come into consideration? Does pay and benefits play a part? Do personal matters play a role in turnover? The study probably will be descriptive or causal although exploratory work may need some consideration. Sample Design In an effort to obtain the data for our research it is important to sample from group that will best represent our population. There are four basic questions that need to be answered in sample design. The first is the subject of our research, or target population. The next question is the parameters of our interest, which is high turn-over rate. The third question is the sampling frame. Because the subjects of our study are acute nurses, we should use the membership directory from the American Nurses Association. With the availability of the directory probability sampling is the best sampling method, which addresses the fourth question. The last question is the size of the sample and according to Cooper Schindler (2008), â€Å"the greater the desired precision of the estimate, the larger the sample must be,† and â€Å"the higher the confidence level in the estimate, the large sample must be† (p. 385). Conclusion Going forward this research will strive to come to conclusions to answers to the key question and based on the answers derived. These answers will create solutions that will help alleviate the anticipated nursing shortage in the coming years. Newfoundlanders undertake this idea, and learn how to confront, conquer and accept what happens in their lives. Wavey has her own past to confront and accept. Throughout the novel and her development of the relationship with Quoyle, she has to learn to trust again after her husband’s treatment of her, and accept his death. She did this through her relationship with Quoyle, by learning to develop a mutually open and trusting relationship. Their trust was developed but a sharing of common painful experiences with their spouses, in a safe and comfortable environment. Wavey was able to share her secrets with Quoyle, because he was able to share his with her first. â€Å"The way Quoyle talked of his love, but never the woman? Could pull out one from her own skein of secrets.† (Pg 307) Wavey’s trust enables her to accept her husband’s behaviour towards her and his death, so she can move forward in her life. Another example of a trusting relationship that is formed is one with Agnis and the new Quoyle fam... ...t them. Nutbeem shows his ability to do this after his boat has been destroyed at his farewell party â€Å"’At least you can smile about it.’ Dennis, half smiling to himself. ‘If I didn’t I’d go round the twist, wouldn’t I? No, I’ve decided to smile, forget and fly to Brazil.’† (Pg 268.) Instead of getting upset and trying hopelessly to fix the boat, Nutbeem accepts what has happened, and finds another way around it. Jack displays his acceptance of his life, is shown in the way he goes out on his boat and fishes everyday, even though his grandfather, father and eldest son all died at sea. To reconcile with the past is to forgive, and be contented with it. To accept the past is acknowledge its existence, and the inability to change its facts. Quoyle, through developing new relationships in Newfoundland and discovering his family history, is able to move forward by confronting, conquering and accepting his own past. This is also been reflected in Wavey’s life. Through her relationship with Quoyle she has developed the ability to trust and love again. Going back to Newfoundland enabled Agnis to confront her familial demons, and so to accept her past and move forward into the future.

A Blind Man Leads the Way â€Å"Cathedral† by Raymond Carver, describes a couple who is awaiting the arrival of the wife’s blind friend, Robert. The husband is not too fond of a blind man staying in their house and is judgmental about meeting him. It’s not until the family sits down to watch t. v. that the husband gains respect for Robert. A show about cathedrals comes on, and Robert asks him to describe them to him. When Robert and the husband draw the cathedral together with their eyes closed, the husband begins to see what he could not describe with his eyes open. Carver uses the cathedral in the story as a symbol of sight, insisting that the narrator was blinded by prejudice before he met Robert and also as a symbol of teaching, Robert acting as a preacher in a church. The husband is very judgmental and negative toward blind people. He states, â€Å"My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing eye dogs† (526). The husband views all blind people as the same and gives them the same respect, which is none. He brings them down to make himself feel better. Carver’s figures close themselves off from their worlds, walling out the threatening forces in their lives even as they wall themselves in and retreat destructively into the claustrophobic inner enclosures of self† (Davis). When the narrator meets Robert and they all sit down for dinner, his opinion about Robert begins to change. He says, â€Å"The blind man had right away located his fo ods, he knew just where everything was on his plate† (531). The husband was in shock that Robert did not need someone to cut up his food and help him eat his meals. He begins to see and appreciate Robert as a person and not just as a blind man. His sight is in full affect when he begins describing the cathedral from the t. v. show. The narrator could see the cathedral, but he could not quite describe what he saw. He and the blind man began to draw the cathedral, and for once the narrator felt like he was the blind and that the blind man was the one who could see. The husband states, â€Å"It’s really something† (537). This is when he can fully see the picture not only of the cathedral, but also the understanding that even the blind can see and understand things with their eyes closed. The narrator comes to understand Robert and learns a lot from him. Robert helps him to open his eyes and become less judgmental of the blind. The husband learns from Robert that you can’t judge a book by its cover, and that sometimes it’s the important things in life that you can’t see that really matter. Cathedrals are holy structures that people go to and receive an understanding of a higher power. In this story Robert is represented by the cathedral being the teacher, and the seeker is the husband. Robert is the one who gives the understanding of what it is like to be blind. Robert teaches the husband along the way by his actions and shows him that being blind is not a disability, but sometimes even a gift. Robert insists they draw a cathedral together and as the husband draws, Robert guides him through the process. Robert states, â€Å"That’s right. That’s good,† he said. â€Å"Sure. You got it bub, I can tell. You didn’t think you could but you can, can’t you† (536)? Robert is guiding the narrator through the process, just as a preacher would guide his church through a service. Robert is guiding the husband step by step, making sure he is getting an understanding of the Cathedral. In the beginning, the narrator was less passionate about Cathedrals, but through Robert’s eyes, he grew found of them. The narrator states, â€Å"The truth is, cathedrals don’t mean anything special to me. Nothing. Cathedrals. They’re something to look at on late-night TV† (535). The narrator viewed cathedrals differently by the end, and they made him feel something he had never felt before. The narrator states, â€Å"My eyes were still closed. I was in my house. I knew that. But I didn’t feel like I was inside anything† (536). At this point the narrator feels outside of everything at the moment and spiritually feels like he is part of something greater. â€Å"As a symbol represents a kind of common humanity and benevolence, and of human patience and fortitude, in the process of â€Å"a-spiring. † Curiously enough it is within the walls of the cathedral that the narrator ultimately ends up† (Nesset). Robert showed the narrator that there is a higher power out there. He did not want to pester the husband by talking to him about religion so he showed him through drawing the cathedral. The narrator felt like he was outside of his own body and felt like he was part of something higher. Robert taught the husband along the way showing him that seeing isn’t believing, but believing is seeing. By this point, the narrator witnessed himself opening up and becoming less judgmental of the situation. â€Å"Only in Cathedral does the reader witness the rare moments of their coming out, and process of opening up in closed-down lives that comes across in both the subjects and events of the stories†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Nesset). Robert was a Christian man, and believes that he showed the narrator that there is a higher power out there, and helped the husband understand that through the cathedral. â€Å"The narrator of â€Å"Cathedral† communicated verbally and non-verbally with Robert, resulting a renewed sense of empathy and a remarkable, almost religious experience† (Champion). The narrator did experience a religious experience through the cathedral, and it made him feel like he was not himself. Through the cathedral, the husband is a changed man. Robert shows and guides him along the way, teaching him that seeing is not everything and that even someone blind can help you to see and understand things you never thought you could describe. In the beginning the husband was very judgmental of Robert and did not want him in his home, and by the end he felt like his life had been missing something and that was the guidance of the cathedral. The sight he encountered as he sat there with Robert and drew the cathedral was like something he had never seen before, and could only be seen with his eyes closed.

How Do Men View Women

How Do Men View Women There are different variables that play into why women are viewed as objects. In today’s society media plays a role on how men view women. As one can see on television commercials and magazines, this adds to why men view women as sexual objects. Although all women are not the same and are individually different, the question remains how should a man look at a woman? In the passage, Looking at Women written by Scott Russell Sanders, he uses different examples to demonstrate the connection between how women present themselves and how they are viewed by men.The following rhetorical strategies are being used by Sanders to make his argument: begging the question, causal relationship, and backing. Sanders uses begging the question when he describes his first sexually attracting experience at the age of eleven. Him and his friend Norman sat in their car as the young girl with the pink shorts walks by. He tried to understand how the young girl had the ability to make him feel the way he did. He states, â€Å"I sank into the seat, and tried to figure out what power had sprung from that sashaying girl to zap me in the belly† (180).Did the young girls dressing in reveling clothes and walking around presenting her self the way she did cause him to shift from one world to the next? The passage mentions that the girl left very little to the imagination as her pink halter bared her stomach. Sanders also demonstrates begging the question in his passage when he goes into depth explaining his first encounter with a naked woman through photographs. He explained as he entered college his roommate hanged photos of playboy magazines. Further he describes that he would dwell over the poster and ask himself why did he see them as objects and not human beings.As mention before this contributes to why woman are viewed as sexual objects. The second rhetorical strategy used by Sanders is casual relationship. He explains how he invented mythical lives fo r the woman in the playboy photos. Further he adds how he has put woman in just another category of objects for sale along side sports car and liquor. Nonetheless, he felt that the women in the photos humanity were reduced. He elaborates on how this effected on how he viewed women as he mentions, â€Å"How did it affect my way of seeing ther woman, those who would never dream lying nude on a fake tiger rug before the million- faceted eye of a camera† (182). Sander feels that through pornography that respect for woman has been lost. Sadly women are no longer seen as human beings with goals and a life of their own, but rather as objects. As Sanders describes, â€Å"woman in the photo would become merely another category for sale† (182). Casual relationship is demonstrated by the way men view woman due to how they are presented. As Sanders explains in the passage whatever the women’s motives, these women had chosen to put themselves on display.Lastly the author dem onstrates backing by using other sources in his passage to substantiate his argument and make his point. Sander states, â€Å"While he was president, Jimmy Carter raised a brouhaha by confessing in a playboy interview . . . that he occasionally felt lust in his heart for woman† (183). Sanders used numerous backing when talking about men lusting over women. He emphasizes that media causes men to focus on women’s sexuality. Sanders also used American poet and physician Carlos Williams to further elaborate on backing. Williams admits, â€Å"I am extremely sexual in my desires . . . A man does with it what his mind directs† (183).Sanders explained how William has spoken for men and how they think. The author also demonstrates how writers did not have respect for women, as Simone de Beauvoir clarified in his novel, The Second Sex, refusing to show the good in women; but rather focus on women’s sexuality. Beauvoir states, â€Å"She arouses in him in submissive ly making herself a thing† (184). Sander further explains that women dress themselves as dolls, and he doubts that men are entirely to blame for the women turning into sexual dolls. The author is explaining that not only men are to blame for women being viewed as sexual objects.Yet, women add to this view by how they present themselves through the media. In the beginning of Looking at Women Sanders tell a story of seeing a young girl walking down the street. That was the beginning of his never-ending battle, for trying to see women for what they are human beings and not objects. He sums up why he thinks men degrade women, and how men should look at women. Throughout his passage he uses the above rhetorical strategies to persuade his audience in his argument. Character Flaws of “Romeo and Juliet” Essay

Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s plays about tragedy. It is about two lovers who commit suicide when their family rivalries prevent them from being together. The play has many characters, each with its own role in keeping the plot line. Some characters have very little to do with the plot. Many characters do not have much time on stage but their parts are crucial to the plot of the story. Some of the character flaws in this play are the reason why â€Å"The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet† is a tragedy. One of Friar Lawrence’s most favorable traits is how good intentioned he is. For example, when he says â€Å"In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households rancour to pure love, (II. iii. 92-94)† he is saying that the only reason he will marry Romeo and Juliet is because he hopes that the marriage will end the hostilities between the two houses. Friar Lawrence is also a man who is not afraid to take risks when he feels it is necessary to help someone. For example, in II. vi., when he marries Romeo and Juliet, he is risking his reputation as a Friar so he can help the two lovers. Also, when he says â€Å"Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilled liquor drink though off;† (IV. i.), he is suggesting that Juliet drink a potion so that she might fake her own death and avoid marrying Paris. This is an extremely risky thing to do because he does not know what will happen when Juliet is unconsci ous. Unfortunately, for all his good intentions the play still ends in tragedy. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the adults betray Juliet because they are unable to understand her. Juliet’s parents, Capulet and Lady Capulet, fail to understand Juliet’s decision not to marry Paris. The Nurse fails Juliet by not supporting Juliet’s decision to remain married to Romeo. These misunderstandings cause the adults to betray Juliet. The first to betray Juliet is her parents, Capulet and Lady Capulet. Capulet decides to marry Juliet to Paris. When Juliet refuses to do so, Capulet threatens to disown her. â€Å"†¦you shall not house with me,† (III, v, 200) he states. Capulet will only forgive her if she will consent to her father’s decision â€Å"†¦I’ll give you to my friend./An you be not hang, beg, starve, die in the streets.†Ã‚  (III, v, 203-204) His wife, upon hearing Juliet’s decision against marrying to Paris, refuses to give Juliet counsel. â€Å"Talk not to me, for I’ll not speak a wo rd./Do as thou wilt for I have done with thee.† (III, v, 214-215) Lady Capulet is angered by Juliet’s choice and wishes. Juliet’s parents betray Juliet by not supporting Juliet on her decisions. Capulet and Lady Capulet do not know Juliet is married to Romeo, a fact that may have altered the outcome of this play. In this play, Romeo’s tragic flaw is that he is always melancholy, miserable, and downcast, and Romeo is always in love. After he meets Juliet, he is very sad because he discovers that she is a Capulet. Shortly after, he is banished from Verona and is very downcast once again over the fact that he will not be able is see Juliet ever again. Romeo is so extremely in love that he says that instead of being banished, he would rather be dead. When Friar Laurence gives Romeo the news of his banishment, Romeo replies by saying â€Å"Ha, banishment! Be merciful, say â€Å"death†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬  (III. iii. 12). Romeo feels that â€Å"There is no world outside of Verona walls, / But purgatory, torture hell itself†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (III. iii. 17-18). Romeo is so much in love with Juliet that he wants to kill himself when he discovers that she is dead. Romeo causes the death of Mercutio and Tybalt. If Romeo was not trying to make peace with Tybalt, Mercutio would not have tried to defend Romeo. Mercutio feels that Romeo is afraid to fight Tybalt and he wants to defend him. Romeo only wishes to make peace with Tybalt because now he is a relative of his. Paris dies by trying to defend the Capulets tomb from Romeo. Paris feels that Romeo has come to the tomb â€Å"†¦to do some villainous shame / To the dead bodies†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (V. iii. 52-53) and dies trying to defend Juliet and the Capulets. Had Romeo not been so quick to try and solve the problems his own way, the play would have changed drastically. Had the characters of this play not acted in the way they did, too loving, not loving enough or not understanding enough, the outcome of this play could have been completely different. We must however realize that this is just a play and by most peoples aspect, one of the greatest love stories every told.
